Notes from Dr. John

07 November 2017

Dear Parents-

It has been an exciting first quarter with many school and individual student achievements. I am proud of our students, staff, and supportive parents, as together we seek to educate our students with the language and critical thinking skills to be global citizens in the 21st century.

Below are some of the highlights.

  • Our boys’ football  won the silver medal at the football tournament in Chiang Mai
  • Our principals instituted “open door” policies so that parents have greater access to our administrators
  • We  inducted our first ever members into The National Honor Society (NHS). NHS is an elite world-wide organization established to recognize outstanding high school individuals who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, service, leadership and character.
  • We hosted the Bangkok Google for Education Summit where our teachers got in-depth training on Google’s tools for education
  • We introduced iPads for use in the Lower School so that all of our schools now deeply integrate technology in teaching and learning
  • We revamped our math and Chinese curricula to improve student outcomes
  • More than 40 colleges and universities  visited on-campus to meet and recruit our high school students
  • Our high school choir and wind and string ensembles performed in massed choral and concert programs at ISB
  • For the English Language Proficiency Test, the TCIS team received 1st Place in the Samutprakarn Province. More than 170,000 students and over 500 schools nationwide competed.  Additionally, Remy (Grade 3) and Boeing (Grade 4) tied for 1st place in  the Thai Language (Samutprakarn) competition while Pinn  (Grade 3), Thun  (Grade 3) and Grace (Grade 10) tied for 1st place in Thailand's Central Region.
  • Sixteen TCIS Art students participated at the International Preview of the Portfolio Forum at Shrewsbury International School where students got instruction and tips on their art from university representatives and admissions officers..
  • Aoey (3rd Grade) was crowned  Champion of the Asia Pacific Junior Golf Association.
  • Fa-Tia (Grade 3) had an art piece selected to be in the EARCOS Triannual Journal.
  • Pac (Grade 3) was the winner of the Thailand Rapid Chess Championship
  • Our After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) offered a wide variety of classes from Biology, English, Thai, and Chinese to various special programs including Chess, Reading and Decoding, Lego & NXT, Art Around the World and Cooking & Baking.
  • We introduced a new calendar where the whole community can keep up with all the activities at school. When you go to the TCIS homepage, you will see also the different sections at the top of the calendar.
  • We had an  article published in East Regional Council of School’s Magazine  regarding the importance of trilingualism in the 21st Century
  • Regency (10th grade) won the silver medal in short track speed skating at the  29th South East Asia Games.
  • TCIS and its families hosted 24 students from Taiwan’s Huey Deng High School as part of a school exchange program.
  • We continued to celebrate Thai culture with events celebrating Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's Birthday as well as a Wai Kru festival
  • Our students participated and medaled in a Chinese speech competition in Bangkok. The competition had over 230 students from 43 different schools. Our TCIS students performed above most other schools and took home multiple awards. Maggie (Grade 10) won Second Place. Kitty (Grade 5),  Pinn (Grade 3), Theo (Grade 6), Noey (Grade 7) and Mars (Grade 8) all received excellent performance awards.
  • Our Middle School launched a new Science Lab and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and our new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Technology (STEM) program in the Lower School.

To keep track of all that is happening at TCIS, please like and follow us on Facebook/TCISbkk and join our Line account, TCIS Official.  We also have an updated calendar on the homepage of our website, tcis.ac.th.

Thank you for all you do to make our students hard working, motivated and a delight to have on-campus and in the classroom.  We are always looking to grow our community and  if you refer a student for enrollment you are eligible to receive 10,000 THB.  Please ask the registrars or any administrators about this program.

Sincerely,

Dr. John

An exciting road ahead awaits TCIS as we move into creating a school that prepares students for the careers, colleges and opportunities that await them. The future is indeed a confusing prospect for parents and educators to understand. What we learned, how we learned and why we learned and the challenges we faced are significantly different from what tomorrow’s future presents for our students and your children.

Our goal is building tomorrow, today. We are doing this through a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes tri-lingualism and language acquisition. Our students will have the opportunity to learn and become fluent in three languages by the time they matriculate; English, Chinese, and Thai. there are also opportunities in Korean and Japanese. As the school moves forward, Spanish will be added to complement the language focus.

Moving forward and building on the success under the leadership of former Head of Schools Dr. Steve Ballowe, we will endeavour to create learning spaces that are motivational, challenging, relevant and appropriate for all learners.

The school board and school administration have worked closely in developing a strategic plan that will map out the next five years at TCIS. I am excited to be the Head of School in an environment that is dynamic, flourishing, and forward thinking!

Come out on August 9th to our Open House and hear our plan for the future!
